Titan and Infinite™ host Webinar Dec. 3 on Use of Infinite™ AquaSys® Water Soluble Support Materials on Titan’s Industrial Pellet and Hybrid Extrusion based Atlas Platform
December 1, 2020 – Titan Robotics, Ltd. and Infinite™ Material Solutions announce a strategic partnership to provide novel water soluble materials for industrial additive manufacturing applications. The collaboration between the two companies leverages Titan’s production additive manufacturing platforms with pellet and multi-head extrusion systems with Infinite™ Material Solutions’ AquaSys® materials portfolio. These materials can be used as both water soluble support materials compatible with a variety of structural polymers and in soluble core applications.

Titan’s state-of-the-art Atlas 3D printers with Hybrid Pellet + Filament Extrusion and Dual Pellet Extrusion systems enable the use of dual materials to be printed using low-cost pellet feedstocks. With the Atlas’ heated enclosure reaching 80°C (176°F), industrial customers can print complex geometries using high-temperature pellet materials such as carbon fiber filled PEI or glass fiber filled PEKK with AquaSys® 180 high-temperature water soluble support material in either pellet or filament form. Customers can also print engineering materials like Nylons, ABS, PC and more with AquaSys® 120 general purpose water soluble support material in either pellet or filament form

Pellet extrusion on the Atlas enables production additive manufacturing solutions by printing directly with plastic pellets instead of traditional filament. Pellet extrusion increases throughput and decreases material costs, while also expanding the variety of materials that can be 3D printed.

With a build volume of 50”x50”x72”, the Atlas 3.6 is one of the largest production additive manufacturing systems on the market with state-of-the-art pellet extrusion technology and an actively heated enclosure , enabling customers to print large parts out of high-performance materials including CF-PEI, GF-PEKK, nylons, ABS and more.
The robust Atlas 3.6 is designed to

Titan Robotics would like to take a minute to thank and highlight Titan’s global network of customers and partners who are helping healthcare workers in their communities by 3D printing personal protective equipment (PPE). As designs were validated for 3D printable face shields, nearly a dozen of Titan’s customers across the US and Mexico jumped into action, responding to the shortage of PPE due to the coronavirus pandemic.

One amazing example of innovation and community
support can be found in Morelia, MX, where Titan customer PSSI shifted their
operations from printing foundry patterns to face shields. To date, PSSI has
printed approximately 1,400 face shields to provide their community and local
hospitals. Using pellet extrusion on their Atlas 3D printer, the team at PSSI
reduced print times down to just 3 minutes per face shield head band, enabling
them to quickly and affordably get these much needed parts into the hands of
those who need them most.

And just outside of Dallas, TX, Titan customer Triumph Group optimized their large format Atlas 3D printer with filament extrusion to print more than 2,500 face shields for the Dallas VA Hospital and JPS Health Network in Fort Worth, TX. The team at Triumph maximized the large print bed and large nozzle diameters to reduce print time by 90% to more quickly produce the face shields.

“I optimized the face shield head bands designs to leverage Titan’s large extrusion width so a continuous vase tool path could be used. This improved the quality and speed of the prints. I was able to achieve a 90% print time reduction,” said Innovation and Technology Engineer John Hannappel in an email to Titan regarding Triumph’s PPE printing efforts.
The Titan team thanks our incredible customers who are

workers during this pandemic, providing their communities with thousands of
face shields to keep them safe.
As a manufacturer of industrial 3D printers, Titan Robotics is utilizing our production additive manufacturing technology to make personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers in Colorado and across the country.
With Pellet Extrusion 3D Printing on the Atlas, Titan is able to print these parts at much faster rates, with much lower material costs compared to traditional filament desktop 3D printers. Printing directly with pellets also enables the use of a wider range of materials, such as flexible materials, for some of these PPE parts.
In order to provide the right parts that are approved by medical professionals, Titan is working through accredited organizations such as the Colorado Coronavirus Innovative Response Team, America Makes, the Department of Defense, as well as local hospitals such as UC Health. The parts that Titan Robotics is printing are either already approved by these organizations or under review by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
One of Titan’s focuses is 3D printing face shields for healthcare workers. With our industrial 3D printers using pellet extrusion, Titan is able to print a face shield halo in 5.5 minutes using less than 50 cents in material. With traditional filament 3D printing, each of these parts would take 2-3 hours. But with Titan’s pellet extrusion technology, we can printing 32 halos in the time it would normally take to make just one. This design for face shields has been approved by UC Health as a re-usable part that can be sanitized.
As part of another effort through the state, Titan also printed hundreds of halos for the Colorado Coronavirus Innovative Response Team, which are being delivered to Genesis Plastics in Greeley for distribution to hospitals in Colorado. Titan worked with another Colorado Springs small business, Motominded, to complete these face shields. Motominded used its laser cutting capabilities to cut the clear shields that fit onto the halos. For this project, several of Titan’s employees brought in their personal 3D printers from home to make these parts as this design was smaller and required filament 3D printing.
3D printed prototypes of medical masks for evaluation by doctors
Titan has also received requests for 3D printing face masks from local hospitals and have printed several prototypes out of different materials, such as flexible materials, for the doctors to test out. However, 3D printing face masks is a more complicated effort that will take longer for the additive manufacturing community to develop. The 3D printed face mask designs are currently being evaluated by medical authorities such as NIH and UC Health. If these designs are approved, Titan will utilize our printers and capabilities to produce these parts.
As the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak continues to have an impact on a global scale, most opportunities to meet face-to-face and demonstrate technology at conferences and trade shows are being postponed. Just within the last week, the Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) conference was put off until March 2021, and the Rapid + TCT 3D printing event has been postponed until April 2021.
While AMUG and Rapid + TCT are the two premier 3D printing events in North America, the cancellations of these shows doesn’t mean would-be attendees have to miss out on connecting with Titan Robotics and experiencing the latest in Titan’s technology.
In the coming weeks, Titan will release new videos and presentations demonstrating our latest Atlas 3D printers and features. At Titan we’re always innovating and creating new solutions to bring additive manufacturing into the production environment. You’ll still have a chance to see our large-format, industrial Atlas 3D printers in action – just from the computer screen instead of on the trade show floor.
At AMUG 2020, Titan was slated to give a presentation highlighting industrial use cases using Titan’s pellet extrusion 3D printing technology. We still plan to release that presentation in a downloadable format in the weeks ahead.
