Titan Robotics would like to take a minute to thank and highlight Titan’s global network of customers and partners who are helping healthcare workers in their communities by 3D printing personal protective equipment (PPE). As designs were validated for 3D printable face shields, nearly a dozen of Titan’s customers across the US and Mexico jumped into action, responding to the shortage of PPE due to the coronavirus pandemic.
One amazing example of innovation and community
support can be found in Morelia, MX, where Titan customer PSSI shifted their
operations from printing foundry patterns to face shields. To date, PSSI has
printed approximately 1,400 face shields to provide their community and local
hospitals. Using pellet extrusion on their Atlas 3D printer, the team at PSSI
reduced print times down to just 3 minutes per face shield head band, enabling
them to quickly and affordably get these much needed parts into the hands of
those who need them most.
And just outside of Dallas, TX, Titan customer Triumph Group optimized their large format Atlas 3D printer with filament extrusion to print more than 2,500 face shields for the Dallas VA Hospital and JPS Health Network in Fort Worth, TX. The team at Triumph maximized the large print bed and large nozzle diameters to reduce print time by 90% to more quickly produce the face shields.
“I optimized the face shield head bands designs to leverage Titan’s large extrusion width so a continuous vase tool path could be used. This improved the quality and speed of the prints. I was able to achieve a 90% print time reduction,” said Innovation and Technology Engineer John Hannappel in an email to Titan regarding Triumph’s PPE printing efforts.

As a manufacturer of industrial 3D printers, Titan Robotics is utilizing our production additive manufacturing technology to make personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers in Colorado and across the country.
With Pellet Extrusion 3D Printing on the Atlas, Titan is able to print these parts at much faster rates, with much lower material costs compared to traditional filament desktop 3D printers. Printing directly with pellets also enables the use of a wider range of materials, such as flexible materials, for some of these PPE parts.
In order to provide the right parts that are approved by medical professionals, Titan is working through accredited organizations such as the Colorado Coronavirus Innovative Response Team, America Makes, the Department of Defense, as well as local hospitals such as UC Health. The parts that Titan Robotics is printing are either already approved by these organizations or under review by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
One of Titan’s focuses is 3D printing face shields for healthcare workers. With our industrial 3D printers using pellet extrusion, Titan is able to print a face shield halo in 5.5 minutes using less than 50 cents in material. With traditional filament 3D printing, each of these parts would take 2-3 hours. But with Titan’s pellet extrusion technology, we can printing 32 halos in the time it would normally take to make just one. This design for face shields has been approved by UC Health as a re-usable part that can be sanitized.
As part of another effort through the state, Titan also printed hundreds of halos for the Colorado Coronavirus Innovative Response Team, which are being delivered to Genesis Plastics in Greeley for distribution to hospitals in Colorado. Titan worked with another Colorado Springs small business, Motominded, to complete these face shields. Motominded used its laser cutting capabilities to cut the clear shields that fit onto the halos. For this project, several of Titan’s employees brought in their personal 3D printers from home to make these parts as this design was smaller and required filament 3D printing.
Titan has also received requests for 3D printing face masks from local hospitals and have printed several prototypes out of different materials, such as flexible materials, for the doctors to test out. However, 3D printing face masks is a more complicated effort that will take longer for the additive manufacturing community to develop. The 3D printed face mask designs are currently being evaluated by medical authorities such as NIH and UC Health. If these designs are approved, Titan will utilize our printers and capabilities to produce these parts.
As the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak continues to have an impact on a global scale, most opportunities to meet face-to-face and demonstrate technology at conferences and trade shows are being postponed. Just within the last week, the Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) conference was put off until March 2021, and the Rapid + TCT 3D printing event has been postponed until April 2021.
While AMUG and Rapid + TCT are the two premier 3D printing events in North America, the cancellations of these shows doesn’t mean would-be attendees have to miss out on connecting with Titan Robotics and experiencing the latest in Titan’s technology.
In the coming weeks, Titan will release new videos and presentations demonstrating our latest Atlas 3D printers and features. At Titan we’re always innovating and creating new solutions to bring additive manufacturing into the production environment. You’ll still have a chance to see our large-format, industrial Atlas 3D printers in action – just from the computer screen instead of on the trade show floor.

Detroit, MI –Titan Robotics, Ltd. will debut its latest innovative production 3D printer with Dual Pellet Extruders at the Rapid+TCT exhibition, May 21 – 23, 2019. As a production additive manufacturing (AM) solutions provider, Titan continues to innovate and offer novel solutions for the AM industry. The new Atlas-H product line features dual retracting pellet extruders combined with a robust frame and industrial closed-loop motion control system that enable print speeds reaching 30,000mm/minute. The Dual Pellet Extrusion System further reduces part production costs by combining high-speed printing with the ability to use a wider range of low-cost pellet feedstocks. This provides additional production solutions that enable the adoption of polymer extrusion 3D printing on the factory floor.

Pellet Extrusion 3D printing on the Atlas with a heated enclosure significantly increases the number of materials that can be 3D printed, with a wide range from the very flexible, to high stiffness and from low-temperature commodity materials to high-temperature engineering thermoplastics. This wide range of materials in pellet form is also the lowest cost 3D printing feedstock available on the market to date, with cost savings reaching 10X lower than traditional filament feedstocks.
The new Atlas-H model with a build volume of 42”x42”x48” also features a new industrial design, capable of reaching print speeds of up to 30,000 mm/min with multiple extruder heads on the same gantry. This superior, high speed motion control system utilizes industrial controllers and servo drives on all axes, enabling precise and reliable movements and smooth G-Code execution.

Tuesday, May 21, 10am – 6pm: DuPont™ Zytel® 3D12G30PT Pellets with 30% glass fiber reinforcement
A high-performance material
delivering a balance of stiffness and strength, Zytel® Glass-reinforced
Polyamide Pellets is a specialty nylon material from DuPont™. Zytel® reinforced
with 30% glass fiber has low warpage and shrinkage, excellent thermal
performance (HDT>150C), chemical resistance, low moisture absorption during
printing while still maintaining ease of printing and high-quality surface
finish. Titan will conduct live printing of Zytel® Pellets with 30% glass fiber
reinforcement during the first day of the Rapid + TCT Expo.
In addition to Zytel® pellets, Titan will also demonstrate high-speed printing of Hytrel® thermoplastic elastomer (TPC-ET) pellets on its secondary Atlas 3D printer during the first day of Rapid. AquaSys® 120 is a new material
from Infinite® Material Solutions specifically for 3D printing applications
requiring high-performance attributes, quality, ease of use and increased
throughput. Compatible with a wide range of materials, AquaSys® 120 features
fast dissolution rates, high thermal stability, superior adhesion and is fully
water soluble. AquaSys® 120 is compatible with a wide range of engineering
grade resins, such as ABS, PC/ABS, Nylon, TPU, CPE, PC and PP. Titan will
conduct live printing of AquaSys® 120 in pellet form as a soluble support
material with nylon as the model material on the second day of Rapid.
Titan will also demonstrate live
printing of a custom test material from Infinite® Material Solutions: AquaSys®
High Temperature Water Soluble Pellets. While not commercially available, this
proof-of-concept material is a high temperature, tap water only, soluble
material that would be used in additive manufacturing applications requiring
high processing temperatures. Titan will print this material during the second
day of Rapid as a single, soluble tool demonstration.

Push Plastic’s ABS reinforced with 15% of carbon fiber pellets and PETG with 10% carbon fiber reinforcement filament provide a production solution for additive manufacturing. Designed for structural components that require high stiffness, the CF ABS pellets and CF PETG filament feature an ease of printing with excellent stiffness, great dimensional stability and a matte appearance with exceptional surface quality. In Morelia, Mexico, one pattern shop is revolutionizing its business and the foundries it serves by utilizing Pellet Extrusion and Filament Extrusion 3D Printing on the Atlas. Proveedora de Servicios y Suministros Industriales (PSSI) is a leading pattern shop owned by the same group as Fundidora Morelia. 3D Printed Body and Core Box Post Processing
Sanding parts to reduce layer lines and apply for high-fill primer can take one to two weeks depending on size and number of parts. Once a smooth surface is achieved, a primer and mold release paint is applied. Patterns are ready for no-bake sand casting with total manufacture time at 3-4 weeks.
Production time to manufacture this Pump Body and Core Box Pattern was cut in half, reducing the process from 8 weeks using traditional methods down to 3-4 weeks using 3D printing on the Atlas. 3D printing also reduced raw material costs, with an estimated 15% – 20% Savings.
“Working with Titan has been the best decision we have made. We have improved in so many ways because of the flexibility (referring to pellet and filament extruders) and the speed the machine works with. We have won a lot of projects because of the efficiency of the machine. We can offer better delivery times with the same quality,” said Alonso Alvarez of PSSI.

NatureWorks has developed a
series of Ingeo™ PLA 3D printing materials specifically designed to meet the
performance requirements of industrial-use parts including high strength, heat
resistance, and even clean incineration for foundry applications while
maintaining printability. Expanding this portfolio, NatureWorks has recently
introduced Ingeo 3D450, a breakaway material combining great printability and
tailored adhesion ideal for building with supports, with a clean breakaway that
minimizes the need for post-processing. Titan will conduct live printing with

Titan Robotics CEO Clay Guillory demonstrates Pellet Extrusion on the Atlas
During the visit, Titan Robotics demonstrated several cutting edge Additive Manufacturing technologies. A highlight of the demonstration was Titan’s advancements in unique materials that can be 3D printed using the Atlas 3D printer with direct pellet fed extrusion. Titan team members and Rep. Lamborn discussed how this technology has great potential to change manufacturing and how Titan’s Pellet Extrusion is already being used in several DoD and aerospace applications.
Rep. Lamborn also learned about how Titan is growing the local economy in Colorado Springs. In 2018 alone, Titan has hired eight new full-time employees and three part-time employees. Titan also helps other local small businesses grow by working with several Colorado Springs suppliers in the manufacturing sector. Rep. Lamborn was also impressed to learn how Titan Robotics was named a Top 50 Colorado Company to Watch in 2018.
